Palmy - 14s and 16s North Island Champs - Teams Results Summary

Background: "Palmy" is the nickname given to the North Island U14 and U16 championships held each year in Palmerston North. It is one of the biggest badminton junior events in the Southern Hemisphere. Teams from Associations all round the North Island converge on the city. The top 3 in each age group meet the top from the South Island at the National Finals later this year).

This is a curious draw which has resulted in Waitakere 1, North Harbour 1, Counties 1 and Waikato all being in Section 2 - and on the surface it would appear an exceptionally tough box. Auckland 1 is in Section 1.

Only 3 teams qualify for Nationals - No.1's in Section 1 & 2 will play off for 1st and 2nd. Then the No.2's in Section 1 & 2 will play off to see who gets the third spot.

Qualification Rounds

The 16s is a little different. Each team is seeded and placed into round robin boxes labelled 1 to 4 (i.e. each box will have a top seed).

After a round robin the winners then go into Division 1, 2nd place Division 2 etc to make up 4 second round boxes. The top 3 teams from the Division 1 box qualify for Nationals where they will join the top South Island Team.
